In February 2002 Ofcom published a national industry report which highlighted the extortionate cost of mobile roaming charges set by UK mobile networks – incredibly up to £1.50 per minute to receive a call. The cost to call the UK when roaming with a UK network abroad can still reach as much as £1.80 per minute from long haul destinations – today. Despite further industry investigations and analysis the cost of using your mobile phone abroad still remains a hugely expensive luxury. 0044 Ltd was created as a result of personal experience of these unjustifiably high costs and, since early in 2003, our focus has been to deliver a clear, simple and value driven solution to avoiding mobile roaming charges.

Since the launch of 0044.co.uk we have grown to become the largest on-line retailer of foreign and global SIM cards which are used by thousands of travellers throughout the year. The UK’s national press has covered the mobile roaming ‘story’ and the 0044 solutions on many occasions and, together with recommendations from existing customers, the awareness of the 0044 solutions to staying in touch while abroad has become widespread.

The Sunday Times – Matt Rudd  “www.0044.co.uk sells SIM cards for specific countries for £20; on the USA Sim, you can make local calls for 18p/min and call home for 18p (mobiles 32p). So the super-scrimper might prefer the same company’s virtual phone card, which allows, for example, 3p/min calls from land lines in the USA. It’s a no-brainer.” 24th February 2008

The Mail On Sunday – Fred Mawer, The Crafty Traveller “By using an Australian SIM card bought through supplier 0044.co.uk, rates plummet to as little as 7p per minute to call the UK and 16p per minute to call an Australian number. These charges are a fraction of the roaming rates and incoming calls are normally free if you use local SIMs." 28th October 2007

The Sunday Times – Matthew Wall “Frequent-flyer mobile users should consider buying a foreign Sim card from a company such as 0044. A pay-as-you-go French Sim costs £35. With Vodafone you’d be paying around £1 a minute. And with a foreign Sim you will not be charged extra for receiving calls from home – as you are with your normal Sim card.” 13th May 2007
