Who's it for?
Whether you’re planning to attend the 2010 World Cup, moving as a permanent resident or perhaps even at the start of the process looking for that ideal property, the requirement to access the internet from South Africa on a regular basis is more important than ever these days. However, sometimes it can still be a vastly expensive commitment or very difficult to understand and set up. That’s where our experience and expertise in the South African mobile market can make a difference, delivering a quality and cost effective solution that’s both easy to use, simple to understand and, above all, great value for money. For those attending the World Cup finals for business or leisure purposes we’ve also introduced the Event Bundles which cover you for the duration of the tournament offering even greater value and bigger savings.
What will it do for me?
Whether you intend to simply browse the internet, bank on-line, book flights, download music and photographs or send and receive email, the 0044 data solutions offer you the flexibility you want and the simplicity you need. And, when using the MTN network Wifi hot spots you’ll have free unlimited data use included. All you need to do is purchase our South African USB stick then decide on the data bundle options below.
If you opt to purchase data bundles only and use them in your own USB or dongle please ensure that the device is unlocked i.e. it will work with any SIM in it (we cannot unlock USB devices) and that the software has the ability to specify an APN.
A set up fee of £10.00 applies to the USB device.
*USB (inc data SIM) locked to MTN for 6 months then unlocked for free.
What sort of technology and equipment do I need?
A laptop computer or suitable desktop PC. That’s all! Any computer running a compatible Operating System; Windows™ 2000 Pro, Personal and XP Pro/Home or Windows Vista. Supports standard 2.0 USB ports, compatible to USB 1.1 (not compatible with USB hubs). For Windows 7 systems please email us separately once ordered to request a compatible USB. A minimum of 512MB RAM and at least 25MB of free hard disk space is required. The South African data USB is compatible with all commercial web browsers, such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Opera. Please download the Quick Start Guide for further information.
How easy is it for me to set up?
Very easy indeed. Providing your laptop or PC meets the above requirements it really is a ‘plug & play’ experience. We send you the South African USB stick containing a SIM (yours to keep) and you simply plug the device into the USB socket on your laptop or PC. The in-built software then auto-installs in seconds and you’re ready to go! And, should it be required, additional support can be provided via our UK customer support team, by phone or email, on all aspects of set up or data usage.
Data usage and validity
Our unique data solutions provide maximum flexibility with minimal commitment. The ‘event’ data bundles offer means that you can use the services secure in the knowledge that you’ll be controlling the costs and enjoying flexible usage. You simply select the individual data bundle option and order on-line or over the phone. The data bundle is then activated and is available via your USB for the period described above. Additional bundles are also available for prolonged stop-overs. Please email for further details.
How does it compare to UK roaming and what can I save?
Our South African data solutions offer amazing value when compared to local South African offerings and can create huge savings against UK mobile network data offers. As an example, one major UK network currently provides roamed data in South Africa for £49.99 per 50MB but only if you have a 24 month voice contract in place and then subscribe to an additional data bundle that meets your needs. That’s a huge commitment for most. Our unique South African data solutions are simple. You buy the USB stick and then select the data requirement you need (only £0.03 pMB or the equivalent less than £2.00 per day!) – that’s a saving of more than 60% and without the commitment to a long term contract.
How am I billed?
You can apply for an account on-line or over the phone and choose which method you’d prefer to pay by. The initial USB purchase and first data bundle is made via a credit card. Individual monthly data bundles can then be automatically paid for with a UK based credit card and, for annual contracts, via direct debit mandate (DDM) through a UK bank account. When completing the order process you’ll be required to submit your credit card details if you wish to pay via credit card. If you prefer to set up a DDM for an annual data contract then select that option, but also include your credit card details as well as part of the security and verification process and the relevant DDM forms will be posted to you for you to complete and return. The USB, monthly data payments and set up costs unfortunately cannot be accepted on a debit card. Subsequent re-orders for data will be billed to the same account or credit card originally used.
Important Information
You may be requested to provide additional proof of I. D. via fax, email or post immediately after purchase to verify your application, credit card and delivery address. This is a quick and simple process and ensures you will receive the equipment promptly and securely, usually within 3-5 working days from date of order when a credit card is used as the billing method or, if DDM payment is selected, 7-10 days from receipt of the completed signed DDM forms. If your departure date is imminent then please contact us immediately after completing your application so we can address any priority requirements.
How good is the coverage?
Coverage is excellent with 98% of South Africa being covered across the options you’ll have to access the internet. On MTN WiFi you have unlimited free WiFi on MTN hotspots plus 10 hours per month on other national hotspots – please see below for specific partner information. For full coverage maps and the ability to zoom into specific geographical areas please click here;
Data calculator - how much will I need?
We understand that, for most users, your internet access and experience to date will have been mainly based on UK home use on a broadband connection. However, this does not necessarily replicate what your on-line experience may be through other points of internet access, such as our mobile USB solution. From our experience consumers can very easily use considerable amounts of data without knowing exactly how much they have consumed. Special ‘Event Bundles’ are also available tailored to provide even bigger savings for those who plan to attend for the duration of the finals. Simple to use, easy to understand and at £0.03 pMB or less than £2.00 per day it represents tremendous value for money!
How will this affect my email address?
You’ll be able to maintain your existing email address and dial into that account remotely from South Africa to check any emails and respond. Using POP email or Web based email won’t affect receiving email with the USB, as the email is received over the internet, so it doesn't matter what internet connection you use. Full user guides and technical support are provided with the USB stick to ensure you get set up with the minimum amount of hassle.
**Data bundles and WiFi - this applies to 50 MB and over;
On WiFi you have unlimited WiFi on MTN hotspots plus 10 hours per month on other national – tbc.
In addition to the data bundles, you have 10 Hours included on other networks - it is then charged on an hourly basis at £10.00 per hour thereafter.
Delivery options
Once the application is approved your equipment will be delivered to your UK billing address and will require a signature to ensure safe receipt. Alternative delivery arrangements can be made by emailing us, immediately after you complete the on-line application, with your order number and change of delivery requirements. Deliveries can be made to South African addresses providing your name is recognised by the South African postal service at your address (or, if renting, your name c/o a landlord at the address). Delivery of the USB and activation of data services is based upon the selection you make during payment. If immediate data activation is requested the USB will be dispatched immediately (within 48 hrs of receipt of your ID) and the data activated. If the data activation is deferred to the following month then the USB delivery is also deferred. Deliveries can also be made to a relative's address in the UK if you no longer own a UK property.
Why should I buy from 0044 and not through my UK network or when I arrive?
For a start we’ll make it extremely easy for you to understand, set up and buy into – whatever your requirements. You’ll also have the best deal available to you in the UK before you leave and the comfort and peace of mind knowing that it’s all set up before you travel and fully supported from the UK for after sales aspects should you require them whilst you are away. Flexibility of buying in on short or long term deals is also a great benefit and means you’ll be able to tailor the package to suit your needs – even as they change.
Similar services can be set up in South Africa directly with most major networks, but we’d advise you to do your research, make sure you have a good grasp of the language, including technical terms and in certain cases you’ll need a proven credit history for some of the pay-monthly deals on offer. Equally you may be asked to commit to lengthy contracts going direct to a South African network and these can sometimes be significant.
UK mobile operators also proclaim to provide data on the move, internet access from your laptop and mobile plus many other exciting offers. However, in setting up the 0044 data packages our research showed them to be overly complicated, dependent on high commitment to a contract and with little or no clear information on pricing for data usage outside of the UK. Bear in mind these will no doubt incur roaming charges and could therefore be a lot higher than UK usage.
Roaming
For security reasons roaming is not available by default on 0044 South African data solutions. However you can activate the roaming feature outside of South Africa by providing a refundable security deposit once in receipt of the equipment (please Email Us to set up and for specific country rates). Please note your standard South African data bundles cannot be used when roaming outside of South Africa and roaming charges will apply when data roaming has been activated.Need data on your mobile whilst in South Africa?

Our Pay-Monthly SIM cards are ideal if you are moving to South Africa or travel to South Africa on a regular basis. Typically it is very difficult to get a contract in South Africa due to credit checks. However we simply bill your UK credit card. In addition to this having a local South African number is a massive advantage when trying to integrate into the local community. Compared to taking your UK SIM card you can save up to 90% on call costs. You will also receive your new MTN mobile number before you leave the UK so that you can hand it out to friends and family. In addition to this we are the only network to offer free inclusive calls to the UK!
