Roaming in… Scotland?!

A paper published by the UK Government examining the impact of a Yes vote in next year’s independence referendum warned that mobile phone companies could introduce roaming charges when people cross over the border.

It also warns that those living close to the border could inadvertently incur these charges if their phones connect to a mast on the other side. UK Consumer Minister Jo Swinson also warned that Scottish independence could also drive up the cost of posting letters.

However the paper fails to recognise key changes in the telecoms market.  The UK Government should acknowledge that the EU is looking to remove roaming charges completely and they are widely expected to be abolished well before 2016!
