Travel with your tablet

by 0044 GURU in Advice

If you’re planning a trip abroad inevitably your tablet will be making the journey as well. Here are our tips on how to make it a hassle free trip. However before you do anything else make sure your tablet is covered by your travel insurance!

Power-Up

The first thing to consider is power. If you’re traveling overseas, always pack your charger (and any international power adapters) in your carry on luggage.

Seek out Wi-Fi

Obviously if you’re travelling abroad switch of roaming and go on the hunt for a WiFi hotspot. Most hotels will charge a premium for access. Therefore you’ll either have to bit the bullet or seek out a public access point. To find free WiFi  check out which nearby cafes or fast food outlets serve WiFi access on the menu.

Get a MiFI & a data SIM

If you can’t be bothered with the hassle of the above. Purchase a MiFi device and take out a 30 day data plan. The beauty of this is the simplicity. All you need to do is pay a one off charge for the rental of the SIM and then just connect to the MiFi device. If for instance you’re traveling to Spain you will benefit from a huge 10GB of data!

Download the apps!

We’d always recommend you download the applications below before you travel.
  • Trip it (Google Android, Apple iOS): If you only travel once a year, this might be overkill. But for regularly travellers it’s a terrific way to keep track of flight, hotels and accommodation bookings.
  • Google Translate (Google Android, Apple iOS): No, this won’t eliminate the language barrier if you travel overseas but it can help translate signs, menus or simple messages.
  • Skype (Google Android, Apple iOS): There was a time when calling home from overseas was difficult and expensive. If you can hook up to a free wifi spot, you can make a video call from your tablet for free.
